looking cold front. it's already making its way into northern parts of california. we have seen some gusts now to 38 miles per hour in crescent city. those winds are headed toward the bay area just beginning to pick up outside. in fact, a wind advisory going into effect this evening expected to see some of those winds sustained between 20 to 35 miles per hour along the coastline and over the mountaintops, we could see some of those gusts in excess of 50 miles an hour. so it's going to be a ripping storm and a lot of rain too. you'll be surprised to see how big these rain totals are coming up. we'll have more on that and the rest of your weather in a few minutes. >> thank you. >>> an apartment fire in san francisco forced more than two dozen residents out into the cold this morning. the call came at about 5:30 a.m. smoke and flames were seen on the third floor of the building at 119 broad street. residents were evacuated. one firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation. but no word yet on the cause. >>> around the bay area now, a japanese diplomat pleaded guilty to two domestic

leverage >>> a mysterious invasion along 12 miles of northern california beaches is puzzling marine biologists. thousands of squid washed up during high tide yesterday along miles of the monterey bay shore. the humboldt squid stranded themselves from aptos to watsonville. some people tried to put them back in the bay but the deep water creatures swam back to shore. a graduate student observing it said this could probably -- said the squid probably don't know where they are. >> they don't see the shore very often so it might be they don't understand what's going on around them and they are trying to get away and don't realize if they swim towards the shore, they are going to run out of water eventually. >> researchers say that mass strandings are common when squid invade a new area, although seagulls and other critters are likely to gorgeous on the carcasses. scientists warn people not to touch or eat the squid as they may contain toxins. >>> if they were old enough, they would be booked into jail and charged with a measure 11 robbery 1 which would land them 90 months in prison. >> a

busy in the northeast after dumping snow across northern pennsylvania, upstate new york and new england overnight. at least 16 deaths are blamed on this storm that started here in california. >>> while it's nothing like that we've got some weather of our own blowing in with a storm arriving as we speak. a high surf advisory has been issued for tomorrow. you're looking at some video from chopper 5 which was checking out the waves around pacifica earlier this morning and with the swell forecasters expect strong rip currents throughout tomorrow night. so we've got some more crazy weather heading our way, right, liz? >> yeah, we do. light rain for the most part. we could see moderate rain at times. it's coming later on tonight after dark. we'll show you what it looks like on our high depth doppler. we're already seeing virga, the rain coming down, the green swath over our high depp doppler, but it's evaporating before hitting the ground. later tonight is when we'll start to see scattered showers remaining unsettled throughout the morning tomorrow. looking outside you're seeing mostly overca
